as much as I try to increasingly limit SM these days, Mastodon I think has a bit of a moat around it in usability, some idiosyncrasies you mention, or people/communities formed on other places that people just want to remain connected to. I find following threads here more cumbersome. And it shouldn't be such a PITA to figure out a thumbnail, though I see yours just fine.
