I've been mulling over the latest Morbid Zoo video (it's really good, by the way.) She talks about the distinction between soldiers and warriors, between a military culture and a warrior culture, and why a lot of modern societies crave the trappings of the latter but are in fact very far from them.
One of her points was that nobody in a warrior culture has ever said "thank you for your service" to a fighter. That stood out to me, and the following line stood out even more: "because that's what you say to a ritual human sacrifice."
