Probably cheaper than massive storage installations, plus whatever is meant to feed them, would be replacing the big coal-fired power stations with nuclear ones. CANDU-type stations, able to use uranium just as it comes from Australia's mines, or recycled uranium from reprocessed LWR reactor fuel, would be very well suited to the conditions.
