What false hopes and phantom fears do you need to throw out today?
quotingTwice in my life I can remember clearly when one of my friends said something I knew instantly was true:

One was at a bar where my then girlfriend had dropped me off to meet him. She gave him a hug, they joked for a second, then the two of us went in. He turned to me and said with uncharacteristic seriousness: "_____ is really cool, but don't marry her. She's a miserable person and will make you miserable too."
Thing is my friend was also a miserable person, but I knew he was right.
Other time was with a different friend in Marin County for the day. We were eating burgers and fries on the deck of some restaurant circa 1996. We were high. Seagulls were lurking, eating leftover food from nearby tables, eyeing ours aggressively. When one got within a few feet of me, I would swipe at it, causing it to jump back.
My friend looked up and said: "you know what your problem is? You're always trying to get rid of things that will go away by themselves."
And I knew it was true.
Hanging onto false hope and phantom fears.
