So much of home electricity is just making do with legacy systems and trying to minimize their risks.

The last electric shock I got was changing a light bulb in an Edison base. The switch, it turned out, was on, and my finger brushed the conductor. A 120 volt AC circuit, but luckily just one side of it. An inherently unsafe design, but we are stuck with it.
