Well, I mean, it *would* be bizarre if I hadn't read, you know, every piece of reportage on China in western media for the past three decades or so.

Because the role of media in the west stopped being "informing the public" ages ago (if, indeed, it had ever actually had that role). The role of media in the west is to further a narrative that is in line with what a bunch of rich assholes want you to believe: that any system that isn't the one they're milking to death is bad.
