Watched this video on why German isn't the language spoken in The Netherlands.
What was most interesting to me is learning the Franks were a German tribe who thrived after the Roman empire fell and deemed themselves the natural successor of the Romans.
The Franks expanded all over North-West Europe and the ones in (what is now) France took cosplaying Romans to the next level by re-adopting to speak Latin.
And this is what eventually became the French language!
