I was a bit intimidated by its size, not because I'm afraid of big books, lol, but because an academic-ish book on a topic so distant from my areas of knowledge is easy to start and burn out on halfway through.

I don't think that will be the case here.

Part of Nathans' focus/argument is on the way the Soviet dissident movement's ideas and tactics came out of and responded to their very particular moment. Which seems like an obvious thing, until you realize what that means:

It means resistance there didn't look like resistance had come to look like in the US/Europe. It means resistance there doesn't sound like US/European resistance, either, in its idea or even its tone.
