I suspect the v-sign indicating peace was a subversion of the original victory meaning by those opposing the Vietnam war during the 60s and 70s.

I stand by my "mindlessly copying" statement relating to usage of the v-sign in the present day. No doubt it is still used to mean peace by some/many users. However, I suspect most people use it as a bunny ears equivalent (mentioned above).
