Yeah, I cannot simply flip a switch to focus on something.
If a teacher says, "pay attention" I'm most likely going to pay attention to that stray hair whisping about their head, or the chalk on their hands, or the way that they have a slight limp, or how tired they look. I'll be fucked if I have any idea what they're saying.
