Recently, I have had several customers that needed data recovery a major problem with Windows (broken hardware, unboot-able Windows OS, malware infection).

Turns out that their data wasn't on their computer at all. I had to help them log into OneDrive to retrieve their data. They had no idea that it was only on Microsoft's storage service and not on their own computer storage.

This is also happening to people still using Windows 10. It is not limited to Windows 11 only.

Microsoft hasn't deleted files from your local folders, but an update has caused understandable confusion.

Files move to OneDrive after the sync feature was enabled by default in Windows 11 25H2.

Here's what's going on:
