After the most recent taste of "magic" that I have been made to taste, I have been reflecting upon some of what I've read - some of it being things you all have heard of.
A lot - not all, but a lot - of magic is "just stuff that worked for someone once." Magical creatures are often exaggerated depictions of real things. The one that is most memed is the vampire as the jew. People have pointed out before that the vampire's canonical weaknesses - sunlight and garlic - mirror real weaknesses of jews. I want to mention one of those.
The cross, held by a true believer in Christ. Jews recoil at symbols more often than most people - one notices that they recoil at the sight of the swastika, and that they instinctively spit upon Hadrian's wall. Obviously, the swastika meant nothing to them before Hitler, when the vampire was written.
Thus, I am led to ask: did our ancestors, in the past, use the cross to strike fear into the jew? Is this *why* vampires recoil upon sight of the cross?
It's an interesting thought. I'm inclined to go read up a little more, but if this is the case then I will be looking for a nice-sized wooden cross necklace to begin wearing more regularly than my current meek charm.
