Back around 1900, unrestrained grazing by cattle and sheep on the Wellsvilles and Bear River range just east of Logan denuded the mountains such that a geological survey scientist who expected to let his pack animals graze on his survey was unable to feed his animals.
It was estimated that around 100,000 head were grazing. After the Wasatch-Cache national forest was established, permitted grazing is now limited to about 10,000 animals, and the trees and vegetation are now regrowing.
