We can probably trust Bluesky numbers as the data itself is public. But X? It's a private company and they can report whatever. Elon is just a liar and should be treated as such. Threads on the other hand might be reporting true numbers due to being a public company but I wouldn't trust them context-wise. We know for instance that they pulled in a lot of Instagram users which accounted for the initial seed of 2.5M users. If my memory serves me well. So the quantity might not translate into quality.
The whole pressure to have as many users as possible is dumb. You need a solid userbase. Not a large userbase. Unless your goal is to sell as many ads as possible. But we've been there before and we ended with a dumpster fire.
