I've thought about that quite a bit and as I understand it, it was often something that was forced on people under threat of banishment or death, and banishment pretty much being equal to death so they probably chose death for them out of mercy because they couldn't have any dissenters in their cult. They probably did other things as well during the executions in order to "save their souls". But at the end of the day it's human nature to have some sort of spiritual belief and system of practices surrounding that as a means of holding groups together. It isn't necessarily it's abstract and fantastical and often contradictory contents of the beliefs, as in my opinion even in odinism there's a lot of fantastical shit, that's the importance of it. Rather it being the glue of a people. I genuinely don't think any religion is meant to be taken literally it is just a glue. That's the importance of it. People in scientology and Mormonism and shit like that don't genuinely believe in it, that's just the flavor they chose for their glue. Say me and a bunch of other like minded people got together and decided to create a religion and follow it, it wouldn't be anything different than what any other bipedal hominids have done. It becomes the bedrock of the culture. A way of life with the God as the North Star so they can have some kinda bearing on this reality without walking around lost in a life without meaning as it is in its natural baseline state
