My group plays just a few hours one night a week, and everyone are old friends so distractions reign and engagement, longer-term goals and the like can be hard won.
As DM, I definitely have to have empathy; balance why each player is there; give them each their moments; and not get frustrated when someone doesn't remember an important plot detail. It's a lot of work but I try.
O2 sounds good & "flavor" is important. I'm always looking for inspiration in that regard.
