I do not think that mass Linux adoption will ever occur. But if it will, it rather will not be a sudden event, but "organic" change. Having compatiblity layer might change situation for home users, but (non-IT) companies will rather not switch to Linux due to unclear OS support (except for IBM-related distributions).
