:questionbox: what is my name?

i am a theme pub
situated at Table Top, near Albury in NSW
built in 1987
(and since copied in Cunderdin WA, and at aussieworld on the sunshine coast)

i’m a copy of a pub that featured in Ken Maynard’s cartoons,
a regular feature in the Australasian Post magazine
from 1958 and for about 40 years

and so, although i am only a 40 year old tourist attraction,
my theme is a rather old and “ocker”
(perhaps ken maynard was a fan of steele rudd’s stories in “on our selection”)

the internet tells me my name is an Indigenous word for place of good drink.
another source claims it is derived from a polynesian word.
What the internet does not say, though, is that for many years it was widely understood my name was loosely contrived from the non-Indigenous expression “have a go mate”

My building design is based on the pub appearing in the cartoon,
so i am an old-style two story pub with bull-nosed verandah on the second floor
on the red tin roof is an ancient 1927 chevrolet flat bed truck, lodged there during one of australia’s infamous flood events

my walls are slightly askew, because in the cartoons, that’s how i was drawn
(complete with rabbits in the dry dusty ground, hovering crows wearing hobnailed boots, tons of blowflies, and other whimsical touches)
