The Americano got its name during World War II. American soldiers stationed in Italy found espresso too strong.
So they started diluting it with hot water. Italian baristas saw this, realized that the Americans were not so strong at all, and playfully dubbed the new type of coffee “Americano”.
Today, in protest of Trump's tariff policy, Canadian coffee shops have begun renaming Americano to Canadiano.
Such a social statement :)
