It's not as much designing stuff as it is putting out fires and dealing with everyone's problems. Seems like people get lazy and just throw problems over the wall "let the engineers figure it out". Not at all what I thought it would be.
That said, when I was a design engineer for a tier 1 automotive supplier, that was 100% design. Didn't appreciate it enough at the time.
