South Korea is rethinking its crypto tax framework ahead of its 2027 implementation. The current plan taxes virtual asset transfer and lending income at 20% on net annual gains over 2.5 million KRW (22% effective with local tax).
Experts at a recent forum argued that categorizing all crypto income under "other income" is outdated for the evolving market. Park Jong-soo of the Korean Tax Law Association proposed a more granular approach, differentiating income into capital gains, interest, dividends, and business income. Complex activities like staking and liquidity provision would be split based on their nature for taxation.
The current framework, introduced in 2020, has been deferred three times without structural changes. This has led to calls for reform to better reflect the dynamic virtual asset market.
