An overlay filesystem is definitely likely to be more complex than systemd can figure out. So don’t even BEGIN to imagine they are telling you the truth. Just use your brain and go ahead and write something for systemd.services (that is, though they won’t tell you this, an init.d-style init script, at least such as in OpenRC).
