"Religion of peace" has to be evaluated with the era. For example an order to not kill innocent people does not exclude children of another religion, heretics cannot be innocent. In the same way "peace" only comes after conversion.
Being raised by a Muslim gran I was taught that the many wars the first Muslims in Medina fought were "only for self defence", that they had to "defend" themselves all over the middle east, across North Africa, and into Spain.
All religions are like this.
