You can also bake the rust out. start a campfire and bury the skillet in the coals over night.
The info online about this goes back n forth. Of course you can over do it and warp or crack the skillet but this was the common method of cleaning cast iron in the days where cast iron was the mainstay. I was taught to do it this way.
