Given brutal opposition from other #Gentoo developers, I have withdrawn the patches to distutils-r1 that implemented experimental support for deduplicating installed files from #Python packages using symlinks. Per their argumentation, users who wish to save tons of space should just use a CoW-capable filesystem, and use a tool like duperemove.
The code will remain in #gpep517 for people who want to play with it, but it's only been tested to limited extent (i.e. within the bumps I've been doing the few last days), and without the eclass support I won't be able to pursue larger scale testing.
