While Duterte's arrest feels like justice to thousands of Filipino families who lost their family members during the war on drug, we should critically analyse the power imbalance here.

The ICC has only become a check and balance mechanisms for targeted African and Asian leaders. US and its allies, primarily Israel remain largely immune to its jurisdiction. Not to mention how Bush 'unsigned' the Rome statute in 2002 while pushinmg for ASPA.

No US or European leader has been investigated for potential war crimes in Iraq, Afghanistan, or Libya despite the thousdans of evidence of civilian casualties and human rights violations.

ICC does not hold western powers accountable because it was never designed to do so. It exists to police the leaders of weaker nations or nations the US dont agree with. It is but an extension of western power. It is there to ensure that they remain within the bounds of western approved governance or face the consequences.

I will celebrate Duterte’s arrest, but I refuse to turn a blind eye to the hipocisy here.
