come to think of it, i tried reading some chinese children's books as a kid (there was this series about bugs) and it was a massive struggle back then too.

depending on what the book is about, the vocab could be well beyond what the early grades would teach (like in my case, the vocab for different kinds of bugs), and looking stuff up in the dictionary was no fun.

but who knows? maybe the kids in china, hong kong and taiwan would know a lot more vocab at this point, since they would only be speaking a dialect of chinese the entire time.
