⚡🚨 NEW - Amazon has ended easy sideloading on all new Fire TV Sticks going forward.
Amazon has switched to Vega OS (Linux-based, not Android/Fire OS) starting with the Fire TV Stick 4K Select in late 2025. This now applies to every new model, including the recently announced Fire TV Stick HD.
What this actually means:
- No more easy sideloading: Can’t install third-party APKs like Stremio, Kodi or Cinema HD. No “Unknown Sources” toggle limited to Amazon’s Appstore only.
- Product pages warn buyers that sideloading is blocked for security reasons.
- Developer sideloading exists but requires registration and special tools, not practical for regular users.
- Older Fire Sticks are unaffected (for now)
- The Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen / 2023) and earlier still run Fire OS and fully support sideloading.
- Amazon won’t force existing sticks to upgrade to Vega OS.
Amazon made this change to stop piracy, reduce malware risks, and gain tighter control. Vega OS currently has far fewer apps.
If you rely on sideloading, grab a current 4K Max or Fire TV Cube now. Otherwise look at alternatives like the NVIDIA Shield or other Android TV boxes.
The era of easily jailbroken Fire Sticks is ending for new purchases.
