A team of economists at the Bank of Italy has flagged what they call a “Chinese shock 2.0,” examining its benefits and drawbacks for Europe. In a note dated 7 July 2026, the group highlights a marked increase in Chinese exports and growing competition from Chinese firms in higher-end sectors.
“As the export of Chinese goods has risen sharply since 2020, Chinese firms increasingly compete with those in advanced manufacturing and technological sectors,” the economists write.
