Interesting little video on the "volunteering crisis" in the Western world, formatted as a broadcast television article and focussing on heritage transport museums.
Prompted by the video, from personal observation I can certainly identify some issues:
- Cost of living and increasingly higher work hour demands drive away working-age volunteers, particularly the young
- Demographic shift as Boomers get older and less physically able to volunteer
- COVID and associated lockdowns "shaking up" people's lives by breaking schedules, leading to different hobbies being pursued (if any)
- Many volunteer organisations being less attractive to demographics that may have more time than others (broadly speaking: younger, queerer and more disabled than average) because of how they operate and often, because of the existing volunteers in the organisation
