Positive feedback is so important to give. Not just because of the fact that it is positive, but also because when you have to give negative feedback, it makes that individual more receptive to it.
Positive feedback should be given in a ratio greater than 3:1 with negative feedback. No one wants to hear negative feedback all the time. More positives than negatives make the negatives more productive and responsive.
Also, when giving positive feedback, provide the "why." If you give the reasons why you appreciated an effort given, then it comes off more genuine and also allows the person to understand what you valued in what they did.
