Many decades ago, as I was browsing the web on a Netscape browser, I had an idea to publish a standard for micropayments to be made to access web content. These micropayments would be in 1/1000 cent units called a “Millicent” (har har, clever me), and they’d be collected by your ISP as part of your monthly Internet bill, then they’d be consolidated into a monthly payout.
I never pursued that idea (mostly because I didn’t know where to start), but I sometimes wonder what would happen if it actually caught on—would it enable independent creators to get paid for their work, or would it spawn an industry of scammers.
