I agree with Bob here. Genocide has a very precise meaning in law. Isreal's actions should lead to convictions under the genocide convention. In common parlance it is quite amorphous.

When I hear speak of genocide I think of something like the systematic murder of the Tutsis. I don't think that the Israelis are (yet) trying to kill every last Palestinian, although that is in fact just one way of committing the crime of genocide.

As a consequence, I think that it is more helpful to speak of what Israel is doing as the complete destruction of the Gaza strip and an ongoing masacre of the Palestinians. What they are doing in the north of the strip is ethnic cleansing. They may well be planning to extend that across the whole territory.

Dictionary writers are not authoritative as to meaning any more than journalists are authoritative as to truth. Dictionary writers both try to give a definition that captures usage and make editorial decisions as to how we should use a word. Journalists try to describe what happened and take a view as to the events significance.
