Putting on my wife’s perspective for a moment, though, I think any restrictions on cars need to come simultaneously with a commitment to reliable and cheap busses. The problem is that at the moment, the busses are so expensive (and getting more so every year) that it is not much cheaper to ride the bus than it is to own and maintain a car. During the rainy and dark season, riding a bike is miserable, and my wife simply won’t do it. We are going to save up for a car because we can’t rely on the bus and because the bus is uneconomically costly.

In this country it seems like there is never any coordination around issues like this, so the stick advances and the carrot always recedes. And the bus costs £1 more per year, forever.
