In Scandy churches for centuries up to around 1800, dead members of the nobility and priesthood were often deposited in vaults under the church floor. The bodies decomposed in their coffins in these aereated spaces. The stench wafted freely up into the church itself. The congregation knew exactly who was stinking the place up during each service. People often vomited.
