Taliban escapee with 1 arm wins taekwondo medal at Paralympics for refugee team
Paralympian Zakia Khudadadi won the first-ever Refugee Paralympic Team medal on Thursday when she won bronze in women's taekwondo, years after escaping the Taliban.

Zakia Khudadadi, a 25-year-old refugee, won the bronze medal in women's taekwondo at the Paris 2024 Summer Paralympic Games, becoming the first-ever Refugee Paralympic Team medalist. Khudadadi's journey began when she was born without a forearm and included an escape from Taliban-controlled Afghanistan years ago. She won the medal match against Turkey's Ekinci Nurcihan in the women's -47 category bronze medal match, and threw her helmet and mouthpiece into the air. She hopes that one day there will be peace in her country and that her medal will inspire others to fight for equality and freedom.
