it's also a big part of why it doesn't cost 30 million USD to set up a new instance on the fediverse (like it does with bsky), but is instead something I could do in my home with hardware for less then a hundred. There are some downsides to a decentral protocol, but I think that during the last weeks the upsides have become pretty clear.
