Journalism orgs exist to sell stories, not to uncover the truth. Once upon a time the two were roughly the same thing. Not anymore. Most people prefer their truth, spiced to their personal biases. And everyone prefers news for free.
I am sure that most major news sources studied the cost-benefit of pursuing this story. It is not a matter of indifference. It is a matter of in-business.
