Believe it or not, Canada IS safer than Britain. We're not as crammed together as the Brits and that makes a big difference.
Of course this is only my experience but I don't know anyone who's ever had a break in. I had one in the 27 yrs I've lived here and I'm on the ground floor facing an alley just a block from one of the busiest shopping streets nearest downtown. And yes, I had left my glass sliding door to my fenced yard open as well as the gate open.
But overall there are many sucky things about living in Vancouver. I really think it depends on which street you live on and how far away you are from junkies! And yet, there are a lot of addicts and beggers in this neighbourhood, loads of seniors, disabilities and totally multicultural in terms of who exactly lives here and where they may have originated. It's the old little Italy and still is dominated by Italian culture, just there's no noticeable mafia here either!
Go out to Surrey and it's a completely different story, I've HEARD!
