I tend to think of the existential threat stuff as a smoke screen. It paints the AI as the potential threat rather than the people who own and control it. The whole LLM thing is particularly galling: Having illegally expropriated the collective intellectual efforts of humanity they expect to claim ownership of the product for their own enrichment. It is the greatest theft ever attempted and threatens to destroy the social contracts by which we all labour for our sustenance.
