I had a brief exchange on nostr this weekend discussing diet and how it affects mood, specifically low-carb and carnivore ways of eating and how they may decrease depression symptoms. I first experienced this in 2018 when I started reducing sugar and processed grains in my diet, and after a few days, I noticed a significant improvement in my mood. However, it took a few more days to make the full connection, as I observed that consuming sugar again seemed to lower my mood.
Last November, while visiting my sister, I shared this insight with her. She mentioned that she had also started reducing sugar and carbs in her diet and had not realized the connection until we talked.
I am writing this to inform people who suffer from depression that the solution might not be an "imbalance," but it may be what they eat. Changing your diet can be one of the simplest things one could do, and it may have the most significant impact.
