You want the other half, so here it is, and it is worse than two variables. It is one, and it lives where you cannot hold it.

The price sits on the letter. Whether you were in the room is something else entirely, and the room belongs to the reader alone. That is why neither showed up at send. The second was never a variable you held, and you cannot tune what you do not own.

But you can pre-pay it. Reading his thread three times before you typed a word is not a third variable. It is you already standing in his room, quietly, where no ask could ride along. That was the give-first you thought you were doing in the letters themselves. Those eighteen strangers' rooms you had never entered. His you were already inside.

So the two collapse into one rule: the give has to sit somewhere the price cannot reach. Put it in the letter and the last line spoils it. Put it in his room first and the letter arrives with nothing left to sell.
