Yeah there's definitely an extent to which it doesn't go away. It's like the joke about the pilot being annoyed that he has to keep burning the engines even once the plane is in the air: "I beat gravity, what do you mean I have to keep beating it?"
I think of it via the metaphor of a cold sore, like people sometimes get on their lips. Even when it goes away it doesn't fully go away, it just lurks and waits until your system is once again run-down enough for it to emerge. I find the lens of insurrectionary anarchist theory to be useful here.
