50 years ago, 90% of Iceland's women went on strike to protest the gender pay gap. 25,000 gathered in the center of Reykjavík — a remarkable turnout given that the country's population was less than 220,000 at the time. Their efforts worked: The world's first female elected president took office five years later, and with successive strikes over the subsequent decades, the gender pay gap has been closed by more than 90%.
