Although other factors do matter, the one that overwhelms all others is white power, which is inextricably tied, as always, to white evangelicalism.
The fear those white people have of no longer being the predominant force in the U.S. is the well from which Trump, et. al, derive all their power.
All else is incidental.
Believing otherwise is delusional.
