Ha! Wait. I think I got it to work.
It took some unusual corners:
Download APKs for Firefox, Signal, Telegram and F-Droid on my PC and transfer them onto the device via USB cable. Lucky that this thing supports USB file transfer out of the box.
To install the APKs I had to use a file manager that I got off some website (apkpure.com) so that's not ideal but I can now remove that again.
Now I can browse websites since Firefox has tits own SSL certs, I can install apps from F-Droid and I have Signal and Telegram which are the only ones that really matter.
Now this just needs a SIM card and it's ready to go and a second phone.
