The point is, our youth soccer apparatus is broken. I was on a traveling club team from U-11 up which played at all the big tournaments nationally and went on to play collegiately.
The missing ingredient is footballing competence and a culture/structure that allows for the right mix of creative development and strategy. When I went abroad and played in Spain for a small university in Madrid their intramural team was better than many D1 teams in the us in individual skill and the style of soccer they played. Some of this is changing but maybe not fast enough.
