So my almost 18 year old twin daughters are back to school this week. They are in Berkeley County, WV where their mom lives. Yesterday was the second day of school.
They said that they saw kids crying because they weren't told about this new law where teachers have to call home to tell the parents if the child requests to be called by a preferred name. So kids filled out the form with their preferred name, some of them not knowing that they would be outed to their parents.
One of the twins' best friends is trans and thankfully his parents already know and are supportive and let him legally change his name a while ago, but I'm sure there are other kids who are less fortunate. They even told me that one kid named Andrew had to have his parents contacted just so he could go by Andy.
This is a ridiculous waste of time and it directly targets trans and non-binary students. I know that similar laws are being proposed and passed in other states. Check if your state is considering passing a law like this and loudly voice your opposition. This is harmful to trans kids and helpful to literally no one.
