From KYC Victim to Sovereign Ghost: My Journey to Building a Bitcoin Node
"I have nothing to hide."
We hear this a lot. But once you’ve found yourself sending Kenyan Shillings via Revolut just to get some "clean" non-KYC sats without bank surveillance, you realize: Privacy isn't a luxury; it’s digital self-defense.
Here is my field report for everyone tired of the "beginner level."
Phase 1: The Epiphany (Leaving the Bank Rails)
As long as you buy Bitcoin on a centralized exchange, you are exposed. The bank sees every wire transfer; the exchange knows your face. The goal: Non-KYC. Buying Bitcoin so that no central database links your name to your sats. It feels sketchy at first (the Kenya story!), but it’s the only path to true financial freedom.
Phase 2: The Foundation – Your Own Node
Without your own node, you are lying to yourself. You are asking someone else's computer: "Do I actually have money?" My solution: A Raspberry Pi 5 running Umbrel.
Pro-Tip for the Sync: Downloading the history takes days. If you have an 8GB Pi 5, set the dbcache in the Bitcoin settings to 5500 MiB. It speeds up the Initial Block Download (IBD) massively! (Set it back to 450 once finished). I’m currently at 67.3% – every percent feels like a victory.
Phase 3: The Vault – USB or Radio Silence?
Your sats aren't yours until you hold the keys.
• BitBox02 (USB): Great for starters. Plug it in, confirm, done. Simple and secure.
• Air-Gapped (e.g., Passport): The "no-cable" version. The device never touches a PC; it only communicates via QR codes. This is the next level of security.
• The Golden Rule: Use a Passphrase (the 24+1 word). It’s like a hidden room in your vault. Even if someone finds your 24 words, they only see an empty hallway.
Phase 4: The Ghost Mode – P2P & RoboSats
Once the tech is set, it’s time for action. Use platforms like Peach Bitcoin or RoboSats (via Tor browser).
• No account, no ID, just a random robot avatar.
• The bank only sees a transfer to a private individual. The link to Bitcoin remains your secret.
Summary:
The journey is demanding, but the feeling of your own node humming in your living room, knowing "I am my own bank," is indescribable.
Start building your freedom!
