If you only hold your beliefs because there's no cost to it (not even true in this case), your beliefs likely aren't that serious. Putting it this way also seeks to remove responsibility for your beliefs from yourself or inescapable truth and place it upon your opponents. It's the right-wing version of stereotype threat.
